Review: John Brumback’s DVD, BANK POOL

If you are a novice player, and the title of this DVD leads you to believe that it will teach you how to play Bank Pool, then you are sure to be disappointed if you purchase this disc.  As a matter of fact, it doesn’t even teach you the basics of banking.  That’s not to say it doesn’t have some great qualities, because it does.  But those great qualities can’t even be recognized unless the viewer already has a considerable amount of knowledge in the art of banking balls.

John Brumback is a master at the game of Bank Pool – a fact that is well documented throughout the entire length of this one-hour and fifty-minute video.  And although the subtitle to the DVD reads “Secrets Of A World Champion” there really aren’t that many secrets involved and they probably aren’t the kind of secrets a person might logically expect them to be: i.e. discussions on rules, strategy, or defense.  Actually, most of the techniques discussed in this video revolve around only one main “secret.”  But that one secret answers one big question, and that answer explains why all good bank pool players shoot most of their shots with a lot of speed.  After divulging that “secret” early in the video, John goes on to demonstrate an assortment of one, two, and three rail banks that, to the casual observer, might look impossible to make.  And it is the revelation of “the secret,” and the demonstration of those shots that makes this DVD something that aspiring Bank Pool champions will want to invest their time and money in.

On the downside, Mr. Brumback is typical of so many other professional players who are great at what they do, but not so great at explaining how they do it.  All through this DVD, John combines broken and unfinished sentences with a lot of terminology that only hardcore pool players can understand.  Along with that, he seems to be trying to teach through the process of osmosis by shooting each shot over and over and over, rather than trying to make his points with some simple explanations of the physics involved in each of those shots.

All-in-all BANK POOL, Secrets Of A World Champion is a very good acquisition for any serious student of the Bank Pool discipline.
