Mesa—The serious players take most tournaments, but the winner of the April 10 match at Groggy’s just enjoys his friends.

Dave Albrecht, who came in first in the regular Tues 8-ball tournament has more fun playing if it isn’t serious.

“These are my friends, there’s no animosity,” said Albrecht.

Not being serious doesn’t mean the matches are easy. Albrecht fought off a packed house of players, including “the favorite,” according to the tournament director.

But the two who split second and third, calling the match before it was played, were friends Joey Barrera and Michael J.

“By the time we get to the top three, the director is gone, and we all know who will win, so it is easier just to split second/third and give the victory to Dave,” said Barrera.

Groggy’s holds pool tournaments every Tues, Thurs, and Sat, and are located at 2207 W. Main St in Mesa, just off SR101.
